arne quinze/burning man

This is a huge structure by Arne Quinze. They call it "Uchronia". I prefer spaceship or even monster is better. It is a fantastic show project.
They built this monster in Nevada, middle of the desert and than make couple of exclusive party nights and at the end burned it.

The size of the structure is 30x60 by 15m height. For construction 1.2x3m wooden sticks used, totally amount is 150 km long. The installation completed in 3 weeks with 25 people. After construction they made 7days&nights party. Final is burning it. Fantastic end of a such a structure. How many designers or architects would burn a monumental structure after realizing it?

You can see more pics of the project on Quinze and Milan website. (Under the studio-2006.)

photos by Thierry van Dort

ps: !Dont worry they plant trees for the woods they used in the project!

Skateboarding, street dance, graffiti...
Urban creates the non-teachable stuff. You can start it with trying it, learning and practice is synchronized, as it was before. Before the professions and schools appears on earth.

taşrada kaykaya binilmez!
English translation is -no skateboard in countryside-. But it doesnt give the same sense as i type in turkish.

Peeping digital

Why we have digital peeping tools?
on msn or on skype, invisible moods for peeping our private public medium.

When we dont want to be seen around or dont want to talk with people, we are invisible or offline. But we still keep one eye on whats up there, who are there. I m most of time appear "away" or "offline" and actually i m online. This doesnt come to me weird or ashamed.

What kind of space is that? We can be visible, invisible, invisible and talking etc. All kind of cross possibilities available, sometimes better than real life. We have gaps that we can escape from any unwanted situation. Any annoying social traditions or manners. Specially moral manners.

Are we freed from boring social kindless rules?

Respect to Architects:Nike Air Max Story

The designer of the Air Max shoes Tinker Hatfield which is an architect originally, tells the story of air max.

He was inspired by Centre Pompidou in Paris that all the technical components and infrastructural elements of the building was visible from outside. He designed the Air Max cushion visible from outside and colored like the colorful pipes in Pompidou.
He thought making the airbags visible would help people to understand the air technology better. Also they were increasing the volume of airbags and the space it needs was getting larger, so they let it free.

Tinker Hatfield starts at Nike in 1981 as an architect and first years he designs new stores for Nike. Then company asks him to design shoes. Some of the Air Jordan series (3,4,15,20) and world's first cross training shoes "air trainer" belongs to him.

Czech Republic official website logo

I like the new Czech Republic logo which is result of a competition. This colorful callouts(talking balloons) reflect the fresh vision of the country. I've been in Prague since last august, i see here that people has many things to tell others. They want to talk and express themselves. For a long time communist regime was here and it took the freedom of the people, cut the connections with out world. Now they want to connect to rest of the world again. They want to collaborate with foreign countries they want to make exchanges. The new logo is a result of this feelings, talking balloons in different colors. The design and content of the site is informative, friendly. Easy to approach and open to world. Like Czech people, they are relax and easy to communicate.
Design belongs to Side2 studio. Here an interview with designers about the logo.

note: You can figure out what u have in common with Czechs here:

Prague National Library/ holly Bilbao Effect

These days Prague is talking the result of the National Library Competition. The winner project is by Jan Kaplicky as we know Future Systems. It is kind of alien like building looking like a cartoon creature from the model. Although most people things it is like a joke and non-sense i like it. Here people(mostly from architecture field) are waiting for an explanation from the Kaplicky about the logic behind the design. Another thing around is that this could be result of the competition but it doesnt have to be realized. Commision can be given to another architect and project.

Somedays ago in Contemporary Architecture lesson we were discussing about this competition and the result. Jan Kaplicky is is the most famous Czech architect around the world. I think he is the only international famous Czech architect. He is 70 years old and doesnt have a project yet in the Czech Rebuplic. He wants to do stg for the Czech people and for his own country. Probably thats why he got the first prize/which means almost commision for this "national" library. Lecturer told us thatKaplicky's project was not matching the competition rules and supposed to be eliminated at first step. Because Kaplicky put the archive underground, instead of above ground as demanded. Another fact the lecturer told is Czech Republic wants to increase the tourism income and they think having an interesting library building will be a solution, like Bilbao Effect.

I m pretty suspicious about this solution, yes it worked out for Bilbao: a small city+ a star architect+ a haute couter building. This was in 1997, 10 years ago. Today we criticize about star architects and globalized star projects. In the last years many fantastic buildings produced by "star" architect that were interesting as a form and as production methods. About Bilboa Museum fantastic thing was how it was possible to build such a building/the usage of computer programs in realizing architecture.

This is not a formul that will be a solution for similiar problems. Bilboa was a unique example for that period of the world, architecture and for that spot.

Here another link about project, and comments on it

Christopher Herwing

Christopher Herwing is a Canadian photographer, lives and travels around central Asia. He doesnt narrow down subjects that he photographs. I like this bus stops serie.

again Hayko

I want to write again about Hayko Cepkin. I listen his music times to times, not as often as last weeks. I slowly feel the lyrics that are magic, intimate and deep. I believe once he had the feelings he is singing now.
The album is a road album, in a car or bus for long journey. I can see how the roads passes and frame flows back.
I hope his upcoming album will be as good as this first one: sakin olmam lazim/
i have to be calm.

LEAVING HOME

Yesterday i watch the movie HOURS*, film about Virginia Woolf and her book Mrs.Dalloway. 3 different story takes place in different periods and at the end of movie stories are connected together.

Leaving your given life, leaving your home: You are at the point 0 and can create everything from zero. How magic it is!

In the film Julianne Moore was trying to leave her home/life.
While so many things connected to you or you're connected to so many thing how we can disappear? and how we can appear into a new life/network?

This brings me to the research i did about street sellers in istanbul/tesvikiye: How the street sellers can appear on a spot one day and stays there for 10 or 15 years.

new serie of Birkhauser

It is surprising to see that Birkhauser is publishing such a serie. Although book titles sounds very technical how they approach to content is contemporary and simple. The content is updated and arranged according to changing representation tools and visual language. Thats the main point that differentiate this serie from others.
But it is disappointing how publishers promote the serie. They announce as it is only practicle books that you should have to realize your project: "the key to your architecture degree"!

Hayko Cepkin

Since the last summer i was hearing his name and saw many concert posters around the city in Istanbul. First time i listened hayko cepkin 2 days ago, on the way to airport my friend played it in the car. He has a very strong impression, you can feel the power in his voice. His appearence also very powerful, kind of bowie&jay jay mixture. Thanks to Soner, he gave me the album when i was leaving istanbul. I like also his comment on Hayko, arabesq rock. Exactly, this is one of the hybrid sounds from our culture.

Villa Tugenhat Laundry

Villa Tugenhat by Mies van der Rohe, in Brno.

The villa will close and go under a restoration for 5 years long. We visited it with proffesor Slapeta. They showed us technical rooms of the villa which is not open to public. This room was used for laundry, and it seems still being used for it.
